چکیده

Though the rapid development of human society, concerns on the fossil fuel shortage, pollution, and end-of-life disposal issues are attracting the most attention nowadays. Therefore, more efforts from governments, industries, and research institutes have been paid to the sustainable development than it has ever been done before. Cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose are the major components of biomass and also the most abundant biopolymers in nature. They are widely available, renewable, biodegradable, non-edible, and have low stable market prices which are competitive with petroleumderived polymers. Moreover, their unique structures have huge potentials to be explored. Not only being used as a raw material in pulp and paper mills, cellulose has been found to have a lot of superior properties when hydrolyzed into cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs), which can be applied to structural materials and nanocomposites synthesis. As a major waste from the paper-making process, lignin has lead to the prosperity of the biobased chemicals and macromolecules instead of being burned directly as a low value fuel, attributing to its unique phenolic structures.

Correction: Direct production of biodiesel from high-acid value Jatropha oil with solid acid catalyst derived from lignin

Correction We found an important error in our published paper [1]. On page 7, Section: One-step conversion of Jatropha oil to biodiesel, line 3, we wrote a reaction temperature of 120degreesC. The correct temperature should be 220degreesC. The pressure was also omitted from the same reaction description and should be 7.1 MPa. Direct production of biodiesel from high-acid value Jatropha oil with...

Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

The cleavage of b-O-4 linkages in lignin can generate monomers with a phenyl propane structure that can easily be upgraded into valuable hydrocarbon biofuels and renewable aromatic chemicals. High-yield lignin monomer production from extracted (or technical) lignin that is produced in a practical way could facilitate the productivity and profitability of biomass conversion processes. However, i...

An overview of key pretreatment processes employed for bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and value added products

The hunt for alternative sources of energy generation that are inexpensive, ecofriendly, renewable and can replace fossil fuels is on, owing to the increasing demands of energy. One approach in this direction is the conversion of plant residues into biofuels wherein lignocellulose, which forms the structural framework of plants consisting of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, is first broken ...

Rapid and accurate determination of the lignin content of lignocellulosic biomass by solid-state NMR.

Biofuels and biomaterials, produced from lignocellulosic feedstock, require facile access to cellulose and hemicellulose to be competitive with petroleum processing and sugar-based fermentation. Physical-chemical barriers resulting from lignin complicates the hydrolysis biomass into fermentable sugars. Thus, the amount of lignin within a substrate is critical in determining biomass processing. ...

Altered lignin biosynthesis using biotechnology to improve lignocellulosic biofuel feedstocks.

Lignocellulosic feedstocks can be converted to biofuels, which can conceivably replace a large fraction of fossil fuels currently used for transformation. However, lignin, a prominent constituent of secondary cell walls, is an impediment to the conversion of cell walls to fuel: the recalcitrance problem. Biomass pretreatment for removing lignin is the most expensive step in the production of li...
